Sod Installation
OUR SODDING PROCESS:
Unlike many other companies we do not use a roto-tiller to mix the existing lawn, weeds and soil. This not only doesn't remove any of the weeds but also mixes your lawns layer of topsoil with the subsoils which is often times full of clay. Quite frankly rototilling is a cheap and easy way for a contractor to not have to remove and dispose of a lot of extra waste and soil. It might be cheaper and easier but it's not going to lead to a healthy lush lawn.
We do sodding right! We use a sod cutter (not a rototiller) to remove the entire existing lawn down to the bare soil, add a layer of top quality black soil over the whole lawn area, then grade the area for proper drainage and finally install fresh sod cut that day. We take leveling the soil very seriously, a properly graded lawn will drain water away from your home and allow your new lawn to grow properly. Without proper grading water can drain towards your house leading to serious water damage. Trust the pros to do it right! We have many years of experience in grading and sodding and have worked with some of the area's largest home builders and many happy residential customers to sod hundreds of homes in the Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph and surrounding area.
We provide upfront pricing so you know the exact cost. We also make sure to stick to our quotes! Our tiered pricing based on the lawn size ensures everyone gets a fair deal for equal work. Many other companies will charge varying prices based on how busy they are and add hidden fees for disposal and dumping. We rather keep things simple and straightforward. Our detailed quotes ensure you know exactly what's included with all the costs broken down. That way there's no surprises !
$1.85/ sq ft – Areas up to 1500 sq ft (average sized lawn)
$1.75/sq ft – Areas between 1500 – 4500 sq ft (average to large sized front and backyard)
$1.65/ sq ft – Areas over 4500 sq ft or where no removal is required
PRICE INCLUDES: REMOVAL AND DISPOSAL OF EXISTING GRASS, GRADING OF LAWN AREA, NEW SOD AND INSTALLATION OF NEW SOD
Only additional cost is new topsoil at $175/yard (including material, delivery and installation)
Our soil is in addition to the per sq ft price so you know exactly how much soil you're getting. Some lawns may need more and some may require less soil depending on the grade. We make sure you have the right amount of soil to do the job right! We also don't use a standard topsoil, our sodding soil is a high quality finely screened black soil blend. No clumps, no rocks, no clay. Typically for every 350 sq ft of sodding 1 yard of new soil will be required to provide a good fresh layer of soil for your lawn to thrive.
The riker:volchok way to sod:
- use a sod cutter, not a roto-tiller
- remove the entire lawn area to bare soil
- add a fresh layer of high quality finely screened soil over the whole lawn area evening out any low areas

Why Sod?
|
Seeding v.s Sodding
• Establishment for seeding is longer
• Time for seeding is limited to spring and late summer/early fall • High temperatures and insufficient water will dry out seed • Weeds can become a problem because of the bare soil associated with seeding • With seeding the area is inaccessible until the seed is fully established, could be weeks |
New Sod Maintenance
• Sod should root in about 14 days.
• Water ever day for the first week, then every second day the following week • Mow using the "1/3 rule". Do not remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade at one time. Gradually mow down to 2-2.5 inch height. • Fertilize as per regular schedule • Avoid walking on until the sod has rooted For more information on Sod Maintenance
